Risk of muscle injury warning is issued for Zocor cholesterol medicine

If you take Zocor (simvastatin) to lower your cholesterol, be aware that the FDA is warning patients and healthcare providers of the potential risk for muscle injury.

Although muscle injury--called myopathy--is a known side effect with all statins, the warning for Zocor highlights the greater risk of developing muscle injury, including rhabdomyolysis, the most serious form of myopathy which can also lead to severe kidney damage, kidney failure, and sometimes death.

Simvastatin is the generic medication for Zocor. It is also sold in combination with ezetimibe as Vytorin, and in combination with niacin as Simcor.
