Good for You: Why sleep matters to your heart

Something you can do for your heart?

Sleep.

Not only is it essential for stress management that we get adequate amounts of sleep, it's also important for our overall health--and the health of our hearts.

Serious sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, and irregular heartbeat, reports the Harvard Women's Health Watch.

Healthy amounts of sleep may be different for each of us, but adults are probably in the ballpark of requiring 8 hours.

If that's not reason enough to turn in early (or sleep later!) consider our former President Clinton, who recently underwent a procedure to open a blocked cardiac artery. He told the Associated Press he would redouble efforts to get regular exercise--and adequate sleep.
